Great new twist

Monopoly is my all-time favourite board game but even I'll admit after probably playing hundreds of games now it can get a bit 'samey'. I got this not long after it was released and have played it numerous times now.
It's best summed up by saying it's similar to Monopoly but different too. The board is arranged in a similar way and the aim of the game is again to move around the board, collect rent and buy properties and the richest player wins. However, the difference is the way you go about winning (or losing!)
Instead of houses and hotels there are various buildings that can be built, any time on your turn, on any of your properties. You don't have to have all of the colours in a group to build and your buildings now go in the middle of the board (you build a city) and collect increasing values of rent as in Monopoly. Community Chest cards have gone, new Chance cards are in and there is an interesting "rent dodge" card under Free Parking. Stations have been replaced with build a hazard/attraction spaces which stop another player collecting rent/block another player stopping you collecting rent. Electricity Company and Water Works have also gone. I promise you these aren't missed, after the initial "oh, where have they gone?", because of all of the new features. The money has also been revamped, it's not pounds sterling anymore but Monopoly money. It doesn't really make much difference, just more zeros on the end of the notes!
However, the biggest difference for me is that the game forces you to auction properties if you don't buy them on your turn (or you can't afford to buy a property you land on). There are also a few 'auction' spaces on the board. I know Monopoly, if played according to the house rules, made you auction but few people I know did in fact auction. It's good because it speeds the game up and you only have 50 seconds to auction a property off (there's a timer that beeps!) and makes it more exciting.
There are skyscrapers that double your rent if you own all properties in a colour group and the Monopoly Tower doubles the rent of all of your properties!
Overall, a brilliant game that has kept the core features in that made the original Monopoly great but altered a few things to make the game arguably more fun and exciting than the original.
If you loved the original Monopoly but want a different twist to the game; buy this. |

I'm a lover of the original monopoly and was tossing up whether to get the old classic or try this one out. The household is very very happy with this version! As previous reviewers have mentioned it is a great remake of a classic game. The board and buildings makes playing fun and looks great!
We have played with 2 to 6 players and have found that it is great fun with all number, but you need to change your tactics depending on the number of people playing, which makes it more interesting.
And it is much faster as well, since there is no need to collect all the colours before building, it brings up the pace of the game.
All around I think that this is a great game and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for an upgrade to the normal monopoly. |

| Bought as a gift for my 26 year old son. Played by family on Christmas Day. Taken over to his group of friends the next day and played again until 2am. Enjoyed by all.Still trying to work out the best tactics! Having played the International version as well, we preferred this version as you retain the money rather than a machine |

| Excellent game - takes Monopoly to a whole new level. Does take a bit of getting used to all the new rules though and wish it had mentioned that AAA batteries are needed! |

We bought this game for our 12 year old Grandson after playing the original Monopoly with him for a couple of years now and this has taught him quite a lot about simple everyday commerce and property trading plus money management.
He asked for this new version which he is delighted with as it offers a bit more interest and variety than the classic original.
We would recommend this game to anyone wanting to upgrade from the original as it is so much more rewarding than watching the youngsters on the X Box and other pc games.
Whilst this comment may sound old fashioned, we believe there is no substitute for giving children of any age your time and shared " table fun " when playing board games such as this.
Great product and heartily recommended. ( Wish makers were paying me commission for writing this honestly worded review ! ) |

| Superb game, a fantastic twist on the original! The instructions at first appear to be very complicated but once you start playing you soon get the hang of it. A great board game for all the family. My son is 8 and he loved it too, in fact he won the first time we played!! Must have been a fluke... Well worth it's money, cannot recommend it highly enough - I loved it!! |

Monopoly city is a great new game for all the family to enjoy, it has all the old features which made monopoly fun, but has a lot of extra features included, included an auction feature, enabling you to auction every buy-able area on the board, making the game quicker and more challenging and fun. there is also a timer included (batteries required) which tells you every hour how long you have been play for, it also tells you how many building that you can make during your turn.
This game is perfect for all you monopoly gamers, but it will also appeal to the audience that doesn't like the long lived games that monopoly uses causes.

| Its essentially the original monopoly we have all grown to love however with a few differences that make the game more fun and makes you think about things more, the new times that comes makes auctions very frantic and fun as you only have 50 seconds which can cause people to make stupid bids on plots. It's a great game to play with family and friends and highly recommend it. I kinda wish it had the electronic bank like the other versions though as in this game alot of money gets passed around in short periods of time but not much of a biggy. |

Monopoly for the 21st century - and that's the problem

If like many families with children you get the games out once a year, then this updated monopoly has pros and cons. It is refreshed, has nice new models, a re-designed board and sensible money (things cost millions). It is also in a generic city so no more Old Kent Road or Mayfair.
The problem we found, though, was despite its somewhat tired familiarity, everyone knew how to play the original game. Trying to explain new rules to a group during the Christmas holidays failed to grab everyone's attention, so I suspect this goes back in the cupboard and we try again next year. No doubt in ten years time this could be another classic (if the electronic gadget keeps working). |
The longest game in the world!!

| Judging by the other reviews I am wondering if we missed something but played the game using the instructions to the letter - for 5 hours!!! We gave up in the end as we simply couldnt take it any more! The main prob we think was that you could only add building as dictated by the machine which stopped people spending - the ultimate winner was someone who had spent the entire game in jail proving little skill or daring was needed. I think we'll stick to the original in the future! |
